Abstract of the Disclosure A reaction chamber having an evacuated volume defined by a central plane and a central axis perpendi- cular thereto is associated with a magnetic field genera- tor providing a field decreasing in strength with in- creasing radial distance from the central axis and in- creasing in strength with increasing distance from the central plane along the central axis and further with an accelerator which injects a molecular ion beam from the periphery of the volume into the vicinity of the center of the volume substantially coplanar with the central plane. The ion beam is conditioned prior to its in- jection into the volume to contain a population distri- bution of molecules in higher vibrational states than in the case of a normal population distribution whereby collisionless dissociation of the injected molecules is enhanced centrally in the volume due to the magnetic field configuration.
