To suppress undesired light peaks which arise at or close to the axis of symmetry of a single-ended electric discharge lamp, and projected away from the base of the lamp, a surface portion of the lamp adjacent the cap thereof, and near an exhaust tip is frosted or matted. Thus, lens effects due to accumulated glass adjacent the exhaust tip, and the curved dome-shaped portion at the end of the lamp, will no longer cause bundling of light rays which will be projected directly and provide axial light peaks or rings. Due to the matting or frosting, the transparency will be diffused and undesired light maxima due to bundled light rays are eliminated.
