2103074 9220404 PCTABS00017 A single-patient-use disposable carbon dioxide absorbing and air treatment device (40) which avoids use of any moving parts. The invention includes an air impervious container (48) having at least two openings (44, 45) for fluid communication between the inside and outside of the container (48). The container (48) includes granular, carbon dioxide absorbing material (63), and may also include a bacteria filter (97). The airstream enters the container (48) and is dispersed into the granular material (63), where it is heated, humidified, and carbon dioxide in the airstream is absorbed. The size, shape of the container (48), and amount of absorbent material (63) are preselected to provide immediate, optimal heating, humidifying effect and carbon dioxide removal. The airstream is delivered to the patient without contacting regulator valves, pumps and the like thereby, avoiding heat loss and condensing of water vapor before the treated air reaches the patient.
