ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hypodermic syringe includes a hollow barrel in which a piston is slidably disposed. The piston is detachably connected to a plunger which extends through one end of the barrel. A syringe floor member is temporarily anchored to the barrel at its other end, as by an O-ring which is attached to the syringe floor and which extends into a groove in the barrel. A needle assembly can be mounted on the syringe floor member. The syringe floor member has a latching flange which grips the piston after an injection has been administered. The plunger then can be pulled rearward to retract the floor member and attached needle assembly into the barrel, with the plunger then being disconnected. This prevents accidental needle sticks which might spread com- municable diseases among health care professionals or their patients. Furthermore, the piston remains permanently latched to the syringe floor member so that fluid can no longer be drawn into the syringe. This feature prevents reuse of the syringe in the event that it is not disposed of properly and is later found by an intravenous drug user or other authorized person. - 1 -
