A single guide wire system for use in continually directional drilling of boreholes, includes a guidewire extending generally parallel to the desired path of the borehole (14). The guidewire (20) is connected at a first end (20) to one side of a reversible source of direct current (30), and at a second end (22) to ground (24). A second side of the DC source is also connected to ground (32). A known current flow in a first direction for a first period of time and in a second direction for a second period of time produces corresponding static magnetic fields in the region of the borehole (14). The vector components of the fields are measured in the borehole by a 3-axis magnetometer, and from these vector components the effects of the Earth's magnetic field are canceled and the distance and direction from the borehole to the guidewire are determined. These values permit control of further drilling of the borehole along a desired path.

Un système à fil de guidage unique est destiné au forage en continu de trous de forage orientés et comporte un fil-guide déployé de façon pratiquement parallèle au trajet souhaité pour le trou de forage (14). Le fil-guide (20) est relié, à une première extrémité, à un côté d'une source réversible de courant continu (30), et à une deuxième extrémité (22), à la terre (24). Un deuxième côté de la source c.c est aussi connecté à la terre (32). Un flux de courant connu circulant dans une première direction au cours d'un premier intervalle, et dans une deuxième direction au cours d'un deuxième intervalle, produit des champs magnétiques statiques correspondants dans la zone du trou de forage (14). On mesure les composantes vectorielles des champs dans le trou de forage à l'aide d'un magnétomètre tri-axial, on annule les effets du champ magnétique terrestre à partir de ces composantes, puis on détermine la distance et la direction relatives du trou de forage et du fil-guide. Ces valeurs permettent de commander le forage ultérieur du trou le long d'un trajet souhaité.
