An expandable mold having sidewalls that are held in a first condition for forming a mold cavity of a minimum volume with the sidewalls laterally separable to thereby expand the mold cavity to a volume sufficient to accommodate the expansion of an article to a condition that eliminates formation of an interference fit between the sidewalls of the mold and the cast article as the article solidifies.
