ABSTRACT An abrasive grit is made by sintering a seeded alumina gel containing zirconia powder. At least 50% of the zirconia is in the tetragonal stabilized crystal structure with up to 50% being in the monoclinic form. The zirconia powder is produced by rapid quenching, preferably in quenching of a fusion of zirconia with or without a stabilizing agent such as yttrium oxide. The abrasive grits so produced are useful in heavy duty grinding of both stainless and carbon steel.
