A B S T R A C T A sintering or other similar furnace having a pre-heat sec- tion in which hydrocarbon effluents are present and including a flue containing a catalytic heater and having an entrance in the chamber and an exhaust external to the furnace. A mildly oxidizing gas such as CO2 is introduced into the flue for combination with the effluent gases being drawn out of the chamber. As the con- taminating gases move through the flue, they pass over the heated catalytic surfaces and react with the oxidizing gas to form water and carbon monoxide, all of which is drawn out through the flue and exhausted therefrom or burned off. The draft or negative pressure within the flue is closely controlled by an air operated Venturi pump, the air of which assists in burning exhaust gases at the flue exit. Alternatively, the catalytic heater can be disposed in a gas barrier located between the pre-heat and sintering sections of the furnace.
