An apparatus and method for sharpening skate blades operate by measuring the length of a skate blade, determining a predetermined profile corresponding to a desired radius of curvature for the blade, and coordinating the motion of a grinding wheel and the blade to grind the blade according to the predetermined profile. A grinding force is applied by the grinding wheel against the blade using a stepper motor coupled through a screw drive, thereby not allowing the grinding wheel to chatter or bounce against the blade. In addition, the blade is clamped end-to-end by a clamping assembly that also determines the length of the blade via the position of the clamp.
Machine et méthode pour affûter des lames de patins comportant le mesurage de la longueur de la lame du patin, la détermination du profil correspondant au rayon de courbure désiré, et la coordination du mouvement de la meule et de la lame en vue d'un affûtage conforme au profil prédéterminé. L'utilisation d'un moteur pas-à-pas couplé à une commande à vis permet d'exercer une certaine force lors de l'application de la meule sur la lame du patin, ce qui interdit le broutage de l'outil sur la lame. En outre, la lame est prise en charge de bout en bout par un dispositif de préhension permettant aussi de déterminer la longueur de la lame de par la position de la pince.
