Apparatus and method for skate training exercise comprising arms (12) of relatively long length pivotally mounted on a frame (26). A resistance mechanism (40) provides resistance as the user pushes his foot away from the body along an arcuate path defined by the arm in a simulated skating stroke. A return mechanism (28) is provided to assist the user in returning his foot along the arcuate path. Various resistance mechanisms are contemplated such as an electromagnetic resistance mechanism, a flywheel fan resistance mechanism, and a weight stack.
