A skew detector arrangement for detecting and measuring skew misalignment of inserts while the inserts are being conveyed. The skew detector includes retro reflective targets and photo sensors directed toward the targets that are adapted to produce signals in response to changes in a retro reflective view. The skew detector also indicates mechanisms for (a) sampling the signals provided by the photo sensors; (b) evaluating and modulating destruction signals; (c) preprogramming pre-established rejection thresholds for skew and misalignment of inserts; (d) comparing evaluated signals with rejection thresholds and (e) diverting away from an insert conveying path respective inserts as a consequence of the skew and misalignment rejection signals.
