An oil-in-water emulsion for treating the skin comprising from about 2 to about 10 weight percent of a cationic emulsifier such as dimethyl distearyl ammonium halide, a substantially nonionizable humectant such as glycerine and a weakly acidic material having a disassociation constant of about 1 to 6. The amount of weakly acidic material is such that the pH of the finished emulsion is about 2.5 to 4.5. Also disclosed is a method of preparing the emulsion.

Emulsion huile dans l'eau destinée au traitement de la peau comprenant entre environ 2 et environ 10 %, en poids, d'un émulsifiant cationique tel qu'halogénure de diméthyle distéaryle ammonium, un humectant sensiblement non ionisable tel que glycérine et un matériau faiblement acide ayant une constante de dissociation comprise entre environ 1 et 6. La quantité du matériau faiblement acide est telle que le pH de l'émulsion achevée est compris entre environ 2,5 et 4,5. L'invention décrit également un procédé pour préparer ladite émulsion.
