A composition useful for moisturizing skin which comprises (a) a moisturizing effective amount of a compound of structure (I) wherein X is selected from the group consisting of: CH2OH, CH OH CH2 CO2-, or mixtures thereof wherein when X does not bear a negative charge, the said compound is a salt; and (b) a skin compatible carrier.
