Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a slag bath generator constructed as a vertical shaft and adapted to operate under pressure with nozzles arranged tangentially and at a downward angle on to the slag bath for introducing fine-grained fuel and gasifying medium and with a middle upwardly curved bottom which functions as slag overflow. In accordance with the inven- tion a cylindrical shaft shell, which is clad with vertically disposed cooling pipes, is provided with a circumferential constriction, formed by the cooling pipes, above the slag over- flow, and the cylindrical part of the shaft adjoins a cupola which is provided with means for supplying cold gas and, where appropriate, also for fuel. The invention also relates to a method for operating a slag bath generator according to which the solids separated in a ho-t cyclone are returned through nozzles into the generator.
