The apparatus (24) is mounted on a trough (22) extending from the furnace tap hole and has a reservoir (36) for receiving the flow from the trough (22). The reservoir (36) has a slag opening (52) and a bottom opening (68). A passage extends from the bottom opening along a weir (80) which terminates at an elevation above the bottom opening (68) but below the slap opening (52). The molten metal flows over the weir (80) and out of the device (24) and the slag is retained in the reservoir (36) and is discharged from the reservoir (36) through the slag opening (52).
