-20- W.E. 53,993 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slag detector apparatus is capable of detecting a condition of 5% or less slag entrainment in a molten metal stream so that actions can then be taken to shut off further discharge of the molten metal from the ladle to the tundish in a continuous casting line. The molten metal stream has a fluctuating cross- sectional dimension and is composed of a continuous succession of recurring cyclical globules of molten metal. The slag detector apparatus employs a coil having an axial length at least equal to the length of each globule of molten metal in the stream therof. The impedance of the stream due to entrainment of slag therein is reflected in the terminal impedance of the coil. An impedance detector is employed for periodic sampling and smoothing of the fluctuations of the terminal impedance of the detector coil. The detector coil of the apparatus is included in a signal sensitivity enhancement circuit which also includes a tunable capacitor connected with the detector coil. The capacitor is used for tuning the circuit to its resonance frequency so that the capacitive reactance of the circuit due to the presence of the capacitor cancels the inductive reactance of the circuit due to the presence of the coil so as to leave only an impedance that is due to resistance of the coil.
