A method of slicing wood in a linear path along its longitudinal axis into pieces of lumber as wide and as thin as desired by using plane pressure pads to apply equalized compressive force on opposite sides of the workpiece in the region of the knife and reducing the sliding friction between the pressure pads and the wood by converting it to rolling friction, and apparatus for carrying out the method. Also disclosed is a method of driving the wood past the knife and a method of keeping the knife thin by increasing the length of its cutting edge.
