ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slide filter device for filtering a wide variety of working materials, having a rigid self-supporting slide plate movable within a housing, continuously or incrementally in steps of any desired size, for carrying screen media across the path of material flow without the use of a backing support in the filter stream. Sealing means are provided in at least the slide plate outlet port passageway by controlling the temperature of the work material which flows into a gap between the slide plate and the passageway walls. With thermoplastic polymers and the like sealing is achieved by cooling the work material in the gap and with certain other materials such as vulcanizable materials sealing is achieved by heating the work material in the gap; in each case a highly viscous or solid seal of work material is formed. Temperature control means to form the work material seals include heat exchange devices and various methods of exchanging heat in those devices. An adjustable mechanical seal is provided for the slide plate in the inlet passageway of some embodiments, as a better practical alternative for sealing against leakage of certain materials that harden irreversibly upon being heated.
