23843-161 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A slider unit for a sliding gate valve for the outlet of a metallurgical vessel includes two engaging refractory sliding plates positioned side by side within a frame. Each sliding plate has a sealing surface which, in use, contacts a base plate of the valve and its periphery is surrounded by a metal hoop. At least one and preferably both sliding plates has a refractory projection which extends over the metal hoops and affords part of the sealing surface of the plate on which it is formed and contacts the other plate.
