An automatic sliding door system in which a motor drive moves the door panel between a completely opened position and a completely closed position. The door system may have a single sliding door, or a pair of bi-parting, sliding doors where the two doors move in opposite directions during the opening and closing operations. The doors are supported on a cylindrical track by linear bearings within a housing, and are actuated by a drive system through attachment to a drive belt. A controller for controlling the speed and direction of the motor is responsive to a sensor system having a door opening sensor and a door closing sensor. This allows the controller to step down the speed of the doors before decelerating to a stop.
