A sliding gate valve (20) for a vessel (10) containing molten metal has a housing frame (22) in which a stationary, refractory base plate (25), a sliding plate (26), which is sealingly pressable against the latter, and a slider unit (23), which holds the latter and is longitudinally slidably guided in the housing frame (22) are arranged. The base plate (25) has on its upper side a plane sliding surface (27), parallel to the lower sliding surface (28) and it is arranged in the housing frame (22) to be stationary in the direction of the sliding surface (28) but to be movable perpendicular thereto. It is thereby pressable against a refractory headpiece (42, 62) secured to the vessel outlet and the housing frame (22) may consequently be removed from the vessel together with the plates and the slider unit. A sliding gate valve can thus be removed from the vessel and installed thereon together with the plates disposed therein without manual engagement.
