Sliding gate valve (10) for a vessel containing molten metal has a housing (12) and a lid (15), which is pivotally mounted on it and receives a refractory valve plate (22) which may be pressed by clamping elements against a refractory sliding plate (23) in sliding contact with this valve plate (22). This lid (15) is locked by a locking means (20) in the direction of sliding of the reciprocable sliding plate (23), the locking means (20) being so constructed that, when the position of the lid (15) changes in the direction of sliding of the sliding plate (23), it automatically relocks and that the locking means (20), however, permits the movement of the lid perpendicular to the direction of sliding. The lid (15), which receives the upper valve plate (22) is pivotally mounted on the housing (12) and the clamping elements are arranged particularly in pairs on both sides of the lid (15) and are constructed as pivotable clamping bolts (33) on the housing (12). An operationally reliable and constructionally simply sliding gate valve is thus provided.
