ABSTRACT A sliding gate valve for connection to a metallurgical vessel includes a housing and a housing cover pivotally and removably connected to it. The housing and the housing cover have two cooperating pairs of joint means comprising projecting lugs on each side. The lugs on one side are pivotally connected by means of a hinge plate and pivot pins whilst those on the other side are connected by locks. The hinge plates and locks are removable and may be interchanged or connected to the joint means on the other two sides whereby the housing cover may be pivoted about any of its four sides.
