ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A sliding gate valve for use with a metallurgical vessel includes a fixed base plate, at least one sliding plate which forms part of a slider unit and is movably disposed in a sealing relationship with respect to the base plate for opening and closing the valve and a lower plate with a pouring tube con- nected to it and urged against the sliding plate by biasing ele- ments. Elongate force relieving means comprising grooves of reducing depth or ribs of increasing height are provided in the slider unit extending in its direction of movement and are so constructed and arranged that they contact the pivotal levers of the biasing elements either directly or indirectly as the slider unit is moved towards the closed position and thereby remove the force exerted by the biasing elements on the lower plate, whereby the latter can be readily replaced when the valve is closed.
