ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved slitter for making plural fabric openings, while the fabric is being knitted on a rotary knitting machine. At least one electric resistance heated wire is operatively mounted on a rotary yarn trimmer associated with the rotary knitting machine, the wire being rotatable with the yarn trimmer. The wire is brought into periodic momentary contact with a fabric tube being knit by the knitting machine to form at least one slit in the fabric tube generally parallel to the axis of the fabric tube. The heated wire is brought into engagement with the fabric tube by a cam arrangement for effecting selective generally radial movement of the wire with respect to the rotatable member during rotation of the wire. A stationary element may be mounted on the knitting machine for cooperating with the wire to effect cutting. This element is mounted on the inside sinker ring which is part of the knitting cylinder and is synchronized for rotary movement with the trimmer and slide assembly.
