A pumping system includes a cyclically operable dia- phragm pump for pumping a material consisting of a liquid and suspended particulate matter. The system includes a closed loop feedback control system for governing the cycling rate of the pump. The closed loop feedback system includes apparatus and circuitry for sensing the density of the material being pumped, and other apparatus and circuitry responsive to the sensed density to adjust the pump cycling rate as an increasing function of sensed density. The apparatus and circuitry for sensing pumped material density includes apparatus and circuitry for detecting the amount of time required for the pump to progress between two points of its intake cycle.
