- 14 - "SLUG AND WIPE TOOL" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE When pipe is being pulled, there is considerable difficulty experienced in removing the drilling mud from the pipe sections and this mud often spills upon the drilling floor as the pipe lengths are raised and disconnected because the mud in the drill pipe cannot escape through the circular holes in the drill bit fast enough to eliminate this spillage. In the present device a cylindrical slug is used having one or more wipe rings thereon. This is placed down the drill string and applies weight to the column of drilling mud within the drill string and forces it out through the drill holes. It is situated at a predetermined distance down the drill string de- pending upon the weight of the slug and includes one or more wiper rings which clean the bore of the drill string as the drill string is raised. A replaceable rupture disc is provided in case the device becomes jammed or mud circulation has to be restarted so that the tool does not interfere with the normal operation of the drill if it remains in the pipe. Means are provided engageable by an overshot on a wire line if it is de- sired to fish for the tool in order to remove same prior to removing the entire drill string from the drill hole.
