A drive circuit for a field effect light emitting device (EL panel) for a small hand-held electronic apparatus is disclosed. When a control signal from a charge/discharge frequency control means is driven low, a first step-up selection switch (SW) is turned on and a first discharge means is turned off. A voltage step-up device and a first voltage step-up means are then connected, and the first step-up means begins a voltage step-up operation in response to a step-up clock signal. A reverse induction voltage generated by the voltage step-up operation is rectified by a first rectifier and is input to the EL panel. The EL panel accumulates reverse induction voltage input at each clock signal of the step-up clock and emits light to provide illumination. When the control signal is switched from low to high, the first step-up selection switch (SW) is turned off and the first discharge means is turned on. Thus, the accumulated charge is discharged. This cycle is uninterruptedly repeated and the EL panel continuously emits light. The advantage is a more efficient and compact light source that includes fewer parts, is less expensive to manufacture, and the life of the EL panel of the light source is prolonged.
