A method and a system for operating an imager during image capture of an object under a wide range of ambient light intensities so as to provide a controlled output image signal for image recognition. The imager includes an imaging circuit having an imaging array on a die and light detectors also located on the die adjacent to the imaging array for sensing the intensity of the illumination on the object and generating signals representing the intensity of the illumination sensed at each detector. These signals are used to adjust the exposure time of the imaging array, the light source that illuminates the object and/or the gain of the imager output amplifier. The signals may also be used to determine alignment of the imaging array with respect to the object, which may be a two-dimensional bar code.
