The smell sensing element has a semiconductor portion formed mainly of SnO2, the semiconductor portion being added with a first component of at least one selected from the group consisting of oxides of alkaline earth metals and with a second component of at least one selected from the group consisting of oxides of Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, Al, Ga and lanthanoids.
