The electrode lifting means (30) are supported on a portal (31). In a lowered position, the portal (31) lies on a support (33) of the substructure (14) of the vessel or cradle (13) and can be tilted in this position together with the furnace vessel (11). It may also be released from the furnace vessel (11) and swivelled aside by means of a lifting jack (43) of a stationary lifting/swivelling mechanism (40). When two vessels are arranged next to each other, the stick electrodes may be alternatively associated to the one or the other vessel by means of the lifting/swivelling mechanism (40).
