A smokeless tobacco product suitable for human consumption is prepared from powdered tobacco. In one aspect, the powdered tobacco has a collective content of N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), 4-(N-nitrosomethylamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1- butanone (NNK), N'-nitrosoanatabine (NAT) and N'-nitrosoanabasine (NAB) which is 0.3 µg/g or less. In another aspect, a smokeless tobacco product comprises powdered tobacco and from about 0.5 to about 15 wt% peppermint, from about 0.5 to about 15 wt% spaermint, from about 0.5 to about 15 wt% menthol, and from about 0.5 to about 15 wt% eucalyptus. The powdered tobacco can be prepared by pulverizing cured tobacco or, alternatively, from an aqueous extract of tobacco.

L'invention porte sur un produit de tabac sans fumée destiné à la consommation humaine préparé à partir de tabac en poudre. Dans une exécution, il s'agit d'un mélange de N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), de 4-(N-nitrosométhylamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), de N'-nitrosoanatabine (NAT) et de N'-nitrosoanabasine (NAB) à raison de 0,3 µg/g ou moins. Dans une autre exécution, le tabac comporte: d'environ 0,5 à environ 15 % en poids de peppermint, d'environ 0,5 à environ 15 % en poids de spaermint, d'environ 0,5 à environ 15 % en poids de menthol, et d'environ 0,5 à environ 15 % en poids d'eucalyptus. Ledit tabac peut se préparer par pulvérisation de tabac traité ou à partir d'un extrait aqueux de tabac.
