A shaped piece of buoyant material attached to a fishing line between the fisherman and the hooking/weighting section acts as a lifting device for the hooking/weighting section. The buoyant piece because of its shape and/or angle relative to the direction of pull, will lift the hooking/weighting section clear of potential snags when the fisherman pulls on the line. The correct combination of buoyancy and weight will allow the unit to settle back to the bottom as soon as the line is no longer being pulled. The buoyant piece or pieces may be permanently fixed to the weighting portion of the hooking/weighting section during production. In a nonpermanent configuration the fisherman will affix the buoyant piece or pieces to the line at a distance from the hooking/weighting section as dictated by his preference.
