A door handle thumb turn is disclosed. The thumb turn is snap fit into and pivotable within the interior part of the door handle, and has a breakable pin that is temporarily held by a mating stationary part of the door handle that prohibits pivoting when held in place. The pin and mating stationary part are spaced from the axis of rotation of the thumb turn and ensure that the maximum area of the thumb turn is exposed for painting. After painting, the lever arm is cycled up and down to break the pin to allow operational pivoting of the thumb turn.
