There is disclosed a portable self contained apparatus for detecting movement of a displaceable substrate. The apparatus includes a housing adapted to be placed in or on a displaceable substrate. The housing has therein a sensor for sensing movement of the substrate and for generating an output signal upon sensing movement, a transmitter for receiving the output signal and for transmitting a transmission signal, and a power source for supplying power to the apparatus.
