The Social Bridges board game invention is a social skills training based on learning characteristics and capabilities of individuals with Multi-System Disorders: Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorders (P.D.D.), to help develop their socio-behavioural, communication and cognitive skills. Studies have shown that although there were certain improvements seen in high functioning autistic children who were followed-up as autistic adolescents and adults, symptoms such as social oddity and excess behaviours still persist. The unique learning characteristics of individuals with Autism/P.D.D. and the combination of some of effective key intervention elements of Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA), Gentle Teaching (GT), Simultaneous Communication (SC) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) serve as the foundation of the teachings of the Social Bridges board game invention. This invention concurrently applies the principles of Behaviour Modification approach of the ABA, the Three Interactional Process of the GT, Direct Teaching of the TEACCH and the Combined use of Gesture and Speech of the SC in carrying out the social skills training through the Social Bridges board game. The fundamental fun elements and simple structural procedures of the Social Bridges board game invention lend itself in the effective implementation of the developmentally and age-appropriate three-level social skills training (basic, intermediate and advanced levels) with underpinning focus on communication and cognitive skills development. The Social Bridges board game enables individuals with mufti-system disorders to have fun and maintain their motivation while learning their targeted skills. These skills are achieved through a structured procedure for a turn-taking game of social skills with a question/answer format. Cues and prompts are afforded to each player (when needed), to ensure that all participants are winners and given rewards as a positive reinforcement. Research-based instructional strategies such as direct teaching and reciprocal teaching are informally incorporated throughout the game to help ensure that individuals with multi-system disorders achieve their optimum level of functioning. -2-
