ABSTRACT "SOCKET CONNECTION FOR PIPES AND PIPE ELEMENTS" The invention relates to a connector for joining pipes, particularly of metal, which comprises a socket 17, and a pipe having a smooth end 15 for insertion into the socket. A seal and friction ring 1 inside the socket seals the pipe into the socket and prevents accidental withdrawal. In known connectors the ring comprises retaining elements 4 having serrated internal edges, and each of which is tiltable to accommodate and grip pipes whose insertion end diameter varies over a specified range. The tilting action means that only a limited portion of the available serrated internal edges 5a-5d may engage the insertion end of the pipe, and may thus lead to serious notching of the pipe. In the present invention each retaining element 4 is embedded in the elastomeric sealing material of which the ring 1 is composed and is axially slidably guided as well as being freely tiltable about an annular bead 19 on the socket 17. Thus, all the serrations 5a - 5d remain in contact with the end 15, irrespective of its diameter (within a given range).
