-7- A socket welding apparatus is used in welding a pipe or other object into a socket. The apparatus includes a peripheral groove in the socket spaced from the outer end of the socket and from the bottom of the socket. A stopper is engaged in the groove and projects from the groove into the socket to form a stopper for the end of the pipe. The stopper is made contractible, as by forming it as a split ring, which may be a flat washer with a through slot or a circular section ring. As the pipe or other object is being welded into the socket, the thermal expansion of the object will push the stopper out of the groove to reduce stresses that would otherwise be applied to the weld, reducing the weld quality and leading to weld cracks.
