A soft-sided bag or article of luggage having an interior compartment for receiving and holding articles therein and which includes wheel structure for facilitating transport of the bag or luggage article. The bag or luggage article includes support structure with a quantity of flexible woven sheet material attached thereto to form an outer cover or shell. The wheel structure is characterized by first and second wheel housing assemblies that independently attached to the support structure at a common corner of the bag or article to effect maximum spacing transverse spacing therebetween and, thus, affording maximum stability to the bag as it is rolled across a flat surface. Each wheel housing assembly includes a generally L-shaped housing with angularly diverging legs. Each housing further defines a blind recess wherein a roller wheel is recessably mounted. Each roller wheel has a relatively low profile. Each housing further includes a protective extension that wraps around and protects the exterior corner and, more particularly, the fabric shell of the bag from abrasions and wear. In one illustrated embodiment, the article of luggage further includes a generally U-shaped handle structure that includes a locking structure associated with each telescopically extendable rod of the handle assembly. Another feature of the present invention relates to the provision of an escutcheon at that end of the luggage article opposite from the wheel housing assemblies. The escutcheon includes dual release camming surfaces for concomitantly releasing the lock assembly associated with each rod member of the handle assembly thereby allowing the handle assembly to be returned to a collapsed position with minimum operator involvement.
