This invention relates to a unitary, manually operable and portable implement, for aerating soil with discrete surges of compressed air conveyed through a hollow tube manually inserted into the soil, comprising: a compressed air storage tank capable of containing a volume of compressed air at a pressure in the range of 14-150 psi, the tank having a cylindrical side wall and closed top and bottom caps; inlet means in the tank for releasably coupling the tank to a source of pressurized air remote from said implement via a hose of a first internal diameter; valved outlet means, in the bottom cap of the tank, for rapidly discharging said volume as a surge of compressed air from the tank, in less than 2 seconds, via an outlet opening of a second internal diameter, said second diameter being at least twice said first diameter; a hollow tube, of internal dimension not less than said second diameter, having side walls, an upper end and a lower end, the upper end communicating with said outlet means, the lower end including apertures in the side walls and a closed pointed tip; handles extending laterally from the tank; and foot supporting steps extending laterally from the lower end of the tube.
