ABSTRACT A soil compactor capable of assuming a narrower profile comprises a support member defining a compacting surface, a shaft supported by the support member and a fluid-powered rotary actuator coupled to the shaft. The shaft defines at least two passageways communicating with an exterior of the shaft through which the rotary actuator receives and exhausts pressurized fluid. In one form, the rotary actuator includes an eccentric housing and two gears which are rotated relative to one another by hydraulic fluid supplied through the shaft. The rotary actuator defines a center of gravity spaced from the central axis of the shaft so as to act as an eccentric when pressurized fluid is supplied and exhausted through the passageways. The eccentric rotation of the rotary actuator provides vibratory and impulse energy for transmission through the support and compactingsurface to the soil or other medium to be compressed.
