ABSTRACT A solar timepiece (1) having a pleasing appearance, especially when built as a wall or table clock, incorporates an arrangement of the solar cells (10) that is favourable from the point of view of production, with regard to the unrestricted design possibilities for embellishment of the dial face, and in regard to connection of the electro-mechanical movement. To this end, the solar timepiece (1) has a drive unit (37) that is independently functional and consists of a commercial and conven- tional battery-powered movement (9) behind a carrier plate (11) for the solar cells (10). The carrier plate (11), through the centre of which pass the cannon shafts (6), can be installed in the plate from the rear in various angular positions, so that the longitudinal extent of the solar cells harmonizes with the decor-matched orientation of light-transmitting areas (23) in the dial face (4) that is immediately in front of them.
