ABSTRACT In a device for supplying emergency back-up lighting in commercial buildings and apartment buildings, it is known that the device operates from standard 110vac power which powers a battery charger and control unit within the unit. In this invention the 110vac power supply has been eliminated. Thus making the unit fully independent from external wiring. In this invention solar cells are installed to operate the battery charger and control circuits. This makes the new emergency lighting unit less costly to install due to the elemination of costly wiring. Also the unit can be installed virtually anywhere, where as wiring to the conventional units would be almost impossible to do.
