TITLE: A SOLDERING IRON HAVING IMPROVED HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS ABSTRACT A soldering iron heating unit is constructed using a blade heater having a large surface area per unit volume, surrounded by a conducting rod to which a soldering iron tip is affixed. The combined heater and rod assembly is contained in a tubular metal hous- ing. The large surface area of the heater, in close proximity to the rod, allows very efficient heat transfer. The heat transfer from the conducting rod can be preferentially directed to the soldering iron tip and away from the heating element by making the conducting rod of sufficient diameter to engage the tubular metal housing only at the end where the tip is attached.
