ABSTRACT An improved solenoid assembly having a dual working gap system and a design which enables control over spring biasing of the solenoid armature and air gap distance. A movable armature is disposed in a bore has a surface which faces the surface of the pole means with the surfaces defining a working air gap across which magnetic fields are transferred thereby generating an attracting force between pole means and armature. The armature further defines a conical shaped surface. A flux collector plate defines a conical shaped surface which faces the armature surface, these surfaces defining another working air gap across which magnetic fields are transferred thereby generating an attracting force between the flux collector plate and the armature, the attracting force having a component which acts in the direction of movement of the armature, thereby augmenting the attracting force provided across the first- mentioned air gap.
