ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A solenoid comprising a field coil provided with a hollow core for generating a magnetic field proportional to current applied thereto, and an armature shaped so as to be moved linearly with respect to changes in the magnitude of the magnetic field. The armature has a first portion of hemispher- ical shape and from this extends a conically shaped portion which leads to a small end. The solenoid disclosed is used to control a valve with linear output characteristics in a heat exchange system for utilizing waste heat from an internal combustion engine.
