IMPROVED SOLENOID ABSTRACT An improved solenoid for use in a solenoid actuated valve or switch as disclosed. The problem with the prior art solenoid is that the magnetic circuit thereof during operation of the solenoid contains two air gaps which adversely affect not only the pulling force of the solenoid but also its response time. The pulling force and response time is improved by the incorporation of a plate or disc type armature (68,90,154) which is relatively unrestrained with respect to the actuating mechanism for the valve or switch device to be operated thereby to eliminate one of the air gaps leaving thereby only a single air gap in the magnetic circuit (Fig. 2).
