The invention provides solid, porous, substantially insoluble composition comprising at least 25% by weight of an oxidized cellulose and having iron bonded thereto. The invention also provides a method of sequestering dissolved iron from an aqueous solution by contacting the solution with a porous, substantially insoluble solid containing at least 25% by weight of an oxidised cellulose. The selective iron-binding property of oxidized cellulose is used in the treatment of bacterial infections.
