A solid crystalline phosphoric acid catalyst comprising crystallites of both silicon orthophosphate and silicon pyrophosphate and having a total X-ray intensity of at least 30 percent relative to alpha-alumina is disclosed. The solid crystalline phosphoric acid catalyst is produced by crystallizing an amorphous mixture of an acid oxide of phosphorus and a siliceous material at a temperature of from 250 to 450°C and in the presence of from 3 to 50 molepercent water vapor based upon the total vapor rate to the crystallizing step. The catalyst is particularly useful in extending the life of a hydrocarbon conversion reaction such as olefin polymerization before catalyst replacement or regeneration becomes necessary.
Catalyseur solide cristallin d'acide phosphorique constitué de cristallites d'orthophosphate de silicium et de pyrophosphate de silicium, ayant une intensité totale aux rayons X d'au moins 30 pour cent par rapport à l'alpha-alumine. Ce catalyseur solide cristallin d'acide phosphorique est obtenu par la cristallisation d'un mélange amorphe d'un oxyde acide de phosphore et de matières silicieuses à une température de 250 à 450 degrés C, en présence de 3 à 50 pour cent en mole de vapeur d'eau, d'après le taux total de vapeur de l'étape de la cristallisation. Ce catalyseur est particulièrement utile pour prolonger la durée utile d'une réaction de conversion d'hydrocarbures comme la polymérisation d'oléfines, avant que le remplacement ou la régénération du catalyseur ne soit nécessaire.
