ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An oxygen sensing element for use in a device to detect oxygen concentration in a gas atmosphere or to detect air/fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine based on the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. The element is a lamination of generally flat and relatively thin layers including a shield layer of a ceramic material, first solid electrolyte layer, inner electrode layer, second solid electrolyte layer and outer electrode layer laid one upon another in the mentioned order. The second solid electrolyte layer and the two electrode layers constitute a concentration cell. The first solid electrolyte layer is formed of essentially the same material as the second solid electrolyte layer, so that there is no or little difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the two layers which tightly sandwich the inner electrode layer therebetween. Hence, the inner electrode layer does not tend to separate from either of the two solid electrolyte layers even when the element is subjected to great and repeated changes in temperature.
